Selections from Dear Evan Hansen arranged by Michael Brown

Dear Evan Hansen won best Musical at the 2018 Tony Awards.  Praised by critics and embraced by lovers of Broadway, this powerful and moving stage show touches on the complex issues of social connectivity and suicide.

The musical tells the story of Evan Hansen, a high school senior with severe social anxiety, which inhibits his ability to connect with other people and make friends. After the suicide of one of his classmates, he fabricates a lie that inadvertently brings him closer to the classmate's family, while also allowing him to gain his own sense of purpose.

Featuring a contemporary pop/rock score, this terrific medley for band includes For Forever; Waving Through a Window and You Will Be Found.

In These Last Day's of Autumn by Randall Standridge

This work was commissioned by the University High School Symphonic Band of Greely, Colorado and their director, Andrew Holcombe, in memory of Drew Harsh. Drew was a student at University High and an aspiring rocker.

In most cases, when writing a memorial piece, the composer simply relies on the description of the person from their loved ones or teachers or sometimes from photographs. I was very lucky and honored to be provided with videos and recordings of Drew performing and playing. These wonderful reminders of his talent influenced every note of this piece.

When writing the piece, I knew that I wished to merge symphonic and rock styles to create a hybrid piece that had one foot firmly in each style. I chose autumn as another point of inspiration due to the changing colors and melancholy, nostalgic air. I have attempted to create a work that would simultaneously evoke the spirit of that season and Drew’s memory.

The title was inspired by the idea that as the winds turn colder and color fades from the world we might look back at happier times and remember not only the autumn fire, but the summer and spring that preceded it.

Hurt by Trent Reznor, as performed by Johnny Cash

Captive by Matthew Conaway

Powerful and emotional, this brilliant and absorbing work for more experienced ensembles will challenge performers and astonish audiences. The music explores topics including depression, self-doubt, and ultimately self-confidence. Hymnlike melodies intertwine with angular motifs and rhythms to musically portray the difficult journey toward happiness.  Captive by Matthew Conaway takes us on that Journey.

One More Light by Linkin Park(Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda
